But after more than twenty years of this work, I have never once gone looking for waste in a compensation system and failed to find it — and it has always cost more than the fix. That’s not an indictment of anyone’s management. It’s closer to a law: without active review, every system drifts, and the constraints you run inside start to feel like the weather when they were really choices. Six questions, from memory.
